Which is why top posting makes sense when it's not necessary to read
the posts it's referring to - eg if the post is merely quoted as an
appendix to the missive.

Top posting and inline posting are useful in entirely different
contexts, and some people can naturally tell which to use when. FWIW a
regular contributor to this list, who posts inline every time here, not
so long ago quite naturally top posted in an off-list reply to me - and
rightly so, since the message was not a discussion of my post, but a
message which referred to it.

It's a question of using your judgement. Some people can do this,
