Ah... now I remember seeing the layout saying United Kingdom
International with Dead Keys. I got that from
System->Preferences->Keyboard->Layouts under Gnome.
I changed it back to "US English", but now, of course, I have " and@
back-to-front. But the " and ' work ok :)
I've really struggled to get the keyboard right on this install... it
really shouldn't be difficult, but various combinations of xorg
settings and gnome settings haven't got it to do the right thing.
