He is loosing it because the broadband connection drops for a few seconds and this
causes the stateful firewall in the BB modem to reset.

I do just as you say with some sites, have a VPN - which is UDP based, so on
BB outage a few packets get lost and then everything is back where it was.
ssh sessions intact.
