[Gllug] best way of making backups

Why not just tar the directories and files you want to back up? I don't
understand the reason for copying them first. 

In any case, why not put the entire procedure into a script? I run a
script every night backing up my essential files to an external drive.
My script also maintains the latest seven backups. I don't really have
to think about it any more,
