  FUSE could be very useful.

  Imagine you have /media/flac/

  If you coded a filesystem, via FUSE, you could have seamless mirrors
 of your music at:

    /media/mp3
    /media/ogg

   Without caching it might be slow, but add caches liberally and you'd
  have only transient copies of the files.
