Sorry about top posting looks like i need a new mail client on my phone.   

My understanding is that the unattended pumps to a pre auth to the value of the max and then return card.  Confirming transaction and correct amount when finished.  So they would get the cash if u drive off

On all the ones which I've used, the card is returned (and has to be
taken out of the slot) before the pump will start delivering fuel -
presumably to make sure you don't forget it afterwards.
