And people have been misunderstanding it since then too.

The issue is not that nobody will be able to obtain an IPv4 address at
any time soon but rather than large allocations will no longer be
available within a couple of years. This may well give rise to a new
market in secondary allocations of IP address space in the short to
medium term rather than widespread adoption of IPv6.

Even if every ISP were to offer IPv6 (and fix the various issues many
have in routers, etc regarding IPv6) it would not result in widespread
adoption as most business and consumer customers are using equipment
that doesn't support IPv6 at the network edge (ie routers and switches)
and the necessary investment to remedy this is not justified until
nearer the time when it's actually needed.
