Perhaps it's a hardware-related problem.  A brief experiment last night
with Ubuntu 9.04 with NM on an IBM T41 worked flawlessly.  A similar
install on a Vaio wouldn't connect to the local router until NM was
replaced with WICD.

Typical!  Flaming hardware "built for Windows" without drivers for
proper operating systems... 8-(
