To explain, multicore does of course offer performance advantages to
applications which are written to take advantage of parallelism
(threads based or MPI applications). Else I would have been tarred and
feathered by many irate customers.
If you're running several single threaded applications at once - ie on
a desktop machine, you will see advantages with a multicore processor.
But remember the applications are contending for access to memory -
that doesn't matter so much in a typical desktop workload, but does
matter in an HPC type workload.
