Common. That is completely market dependent.

You have to be at the right place, at the right time, and be lucky
enough to have directed your career to a place where it coincided with
both.

A single change in technology, management practices, economic
situation and you may not command as much (or as little) money as you
were one year ago.

I have seen this first hand recently and in past recessions, of which
I have seen several in different countries.
