What about PHP 5.2 - released in November 2006 and still not supported 
by RedHat?

(Debian had PHP 5.2 in  Etch [April 2007] and now in lenny [Feb 2009])

For my money/time Debian gets the balance about right - I find Ubuntu a 
bit too bleeding edge and RedHat a bit too slow.
