This works fine at the (tens of thousands of employees) place I know
about. Sure, you can trash your standard-issue laptop (Windows or
Linux). What help do you get if you do? You can reinstall it _really
quickly_, and the reinstallation process doesn't nuke a particular
partition, so keep anything you wanted there.

Keeps most people happy. If you want to tinker you can; but staff time
isn't bled away in fixing tinkered-with machines.
