Echoing Ryan's reply partially, it might also be a good idea to learn
a particular relational database (in addition to reading about them).

If you do this, discount proprietary databases (ie. Oracle), and
things which are popular but aren't really databases (ie. MySQL).

That leaves you with PostgreSQL, which is an excellent relational
database *and* comes with copious online documentation, both a
tutorial and detailed technical docs:
