many ideas about the recovery, or not, of data from disks stem from 
peter gutman's 1996 paper linked to below. he has revisited the topic a 
couple of times since to update the paper and add updated information in 
epilogues.

it is well worth a read if you wish to know more about the area and also 
to decide if your data is at risk when you sell your wiped disks.
