Your information may be outdated.
IBM sold out to Lenovo, who make some fairly unreliable laptops. The old
original IBM Thinkpads made before Lenovo's involvement are fine pieces of
kit and are still highly-prized as a result.
However, the old IBM Thinkpads are slowly failing and have fairly modest
specs by modern standards, and so can't really be recommended except to
enthusiasts who are prepared to scour eBay and computer fairs for them and
suffer the possible consequences.

I treat mine as a portable thin client that can still do a good amount of
heavy lifting locally if disconnected from the Internet. It's a bit bulky to
use as a disk: a USB thumbdrive is so much more convenient.
