I'd be frankly astonished if the long-term performance of this on
rotating storage were anything but abysmal. Log-structured filesystems
were all the rage for a while in the 1990s but they foundered on this.

They're a great idea, but only if fragmentation is irrelevant. So
they're great for SSDs and awful for magnetic disks.
