BBC Outside Broadcasts decided to ditch their point-to-point radio links
and purchased a 5KM length of tough 12-fibre link on a large wooden drum. It
was delivered to a golf course the night before it was required for a
programme, so the riggers had very little time to lay it out, sky it over
roads, etc. The following day only half the fibres worked. A hot dog stall
had been parked at the edge of the fairway, and the vehicle towing it had
driven into undergrowth, picked up the cable in the tyre tread, and wrapped
it round the wheel. They had to cut the cable and weld all 12 fibres, and
ended up with a 5KM drum of cable with a joint in a diecast box about 2KM
from the end.
