[Gllug] GRUB on USB drive

I will double check - but I've tried each partition and GRUB can't see 
anything on them.

I do get a different error on the swap partition though. (Can't read 
disk format - I think)

I've formatted as /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdb3 (all primary)

just using fdisk, mkfs.ext3, and mkswap

It does have this - and gets as far as GRUB stage 1.5

which doesn't get me to a menu

So I tried going to the command line from the GRUB menu launched from 
internal HDD

Do I have to boot from USB for GRUB to be able to use the BIOS' USB drivers?
