Maybe I mis-read, but I find it hard to believe that the infrastructure costs
for fibre to the home are similar to those for copper.
Copper requires a cheap terminator (master socket) in the subscribers premises.
We have fibre into our premises here and it has a rather more expensive mains-
powered NTU-type gizmo mounted on the wall. Terminating the fibre into the
device was from memory quite a lengthy and skilled process process compared to
screwing a pair of wires into a faceplate connector. I have no idea how much
fibre costs per Km compared to a copper pair, but I would imagine it to be
somewhat more expensive. Then there is the additional problem of routing the
fibre to flats, shared premises etc etc - not to mention the costs of repairing
breaks.
