The web has got to the state when you either throw hardware at the
problem or go back to browsing in links.
I typically have in excess of 130 tabs open in firefox at once.
Javascript, flash, animated gifs etc. all combine to eat cpu. If you
use a lot of tabs, you need a lot of grunt to get rid of it. Extra
register space helps.
It's not something I've benchmarked, but the 64 bit feels faster on my
inordinately high usage of firefox.
