Indeed.

At the hardware level, not instruction sets, 64-bit Xeon used the
classic northbridge/southbridge architecture - ie. they were a Xeon
chip with 64 bit innards. Thie meant that Opteron with the
hypertransport bus outhauled it in many HPC applications. Intel fought
back with higher clock speeds, but now have the Nehalem with
quickpath, which is the equivalent to hypertransport.
