[Gllug] Missing RAM

Checking an old desktop machine I ran
free -g
and was happily told it had 1GB. About a month later I had reason to visit the
machine again and as I was just going to visit a computer show I thought I
would add some ram. Opening up the machine I found it had 2GB.
Rebooted and the BIOS shows 2GB.
free -g gives 1GB.
free gives 2072544
OK so rounding causes it to drop the second GB.

However my question is where is the missing 24608 bytes.

On another machine with 2GB free (or proc/cat/meminfo) shows the total memory
as 2033816 which is 63336 bytes short.

The question is what uses this tiny amount of memory and why is it not an
exact number of K such as 24, 32 or 64?

On a 1GB machine I find it is missing 16600 bytes and yet another 2GB machine
it is 32548 bytes.
