Actually, one other recycling trick I probably should have mentioned is
to get hold of some small, ex server, 10,000 rpm fast SCSI drives and
cheapo SCSI cards off ebay and use those for the system disk. The
performance of those would be substantially better than old notebook
drives and, as it's considered yesterday's technology, they shouldn't
cost too much.
