[Gllug] Why we still like CRTs

I definitely prefer CRTs but when the size goes 24"+ they are difficult
to find and prohibitively expensive, even when not considering postage.
That is why I have only recently changed the monitor of my home PC to a
LCD, when I decided to go for a 28". I have had LCDs at work for years.
My 17" AOC CRT had lasted me 8 years - and it has had some fairly heavy
usage. I only got rid of it as a the composite cable broke! It will be
interesting to find out how long my LCD one will last, I doubt it will
be 8 years.

Nowadays more than ever everything is built to break after a certain
amount of time. Reducing power consumption is important but what about
the environmental impact of the disposable culture we have? Everything
from cars to kettles is built to last a shorter amount of time so we all
have to buy replacement sooner.

I'm sorry if I've gone a bit OT :)

Well measured with my power meter at the mains socket my Dell 2408WFP
takes
68 Watts.

Here are some other figures for interest.

Cisco 3560G 48.4W
Cisco 2960 20.2W

A dual core atom (ION/330) based system 50W under load.

opteron 275 2.2Ghz Dual Core processor *2 (DL385 6 15K hard drives and 3
fiber channel cards) 365W under load, 300W idle!
