AFAIK the pixels in LCD monitors just 'gate' light produced by the
backlight, and since this is always on I can't see how rendering darker
images would consume less power. Unless the gates are normally closed and
require current to open and let light through... Compared with CRTs and
plasma displays where you have electrons hitting a phosphor or gases being
electrically excited in order to produce light, and where you would imagine
that having to do less of this would mean drawing less power.
