Standard LCD monitor consumption does not vary with picture content. I
have just looked at the spec for a high quality 19inch CRT which claims
145watts peak (which would be a peak white screen), no average specified,
3watts standby.
Modern CRTs do not have iron core transformers, there is efficient power
recovery, and the 20inch monitor in front of me runs cool. I would expect a
10 year average life. I still choose to use CRT monitors, despite having
tried using an LCD monitor at home.
I have felt the heat from many LCD monitors, they do not all run cool. I
have also had a very close look at the LED backlit LCD TV/monitors now
available, they are impressive but expensive. Unfortunately the
demonstration programmes were 50% live and definitely not HD, only about 50%
"HD" recording.
