No the screen isn't LCD

mostly the use "e-ink" - which is quite close in appearance to ink on paper.

I did have a play with one of the sony ones - the e-ink technology is very
impressive.

I don't think the Kindle is subsidised (it's pricey)

Last time I looked Amazon were charging MORE for digital books that I
wanted than for the same book in paperback.

But then CD's are often cheaper than MP3 downloads)

I don't know that it has to be a lot less - but for something I can't
lend, display, or sell - it has to be less.
