I found the following extract from the F.T. today very illuminating ....

What is 64bit Computing?
Computers process instructiobns in binary format.
Eaach bit is capable of processing one binary instruction at a time.
Until recently, Most PCs used 32-bit processors, meaning that they could
porocess 32 binary instructions per clock cycle.
Since 64-bit systems can process twice as many instructions per second,
they are much faster.
