I use kino to do the actual data import from the source ( so either over 
firewire to the mini-dv recorder or pull mpeg over usb ) and prep the 
stuff for editing - chop into manageable bits, add the effect stuff into 
clips and things like that.

Cinelerra then for the actual editing / mixing.
