I had very similar problems when introducing Opensuse 11.2 workstations.
This time with Gnome - we would have problems starting new desktop
sessions if someone moved to another machine,
and these weren;t reproducible, ie. thing woudl work for a few days,
then bang no login.
Lots of tracing of xesssion logs as you have done, lots of replacing
.gnome directory trees with fresh copies.
The solution? Move to KDE.....

I guess you didn't want to hear that!
