Now, this may have changed in Windowses later than XP (but why, if you
keep an install around to play videogames, would you use one), but
that is absolutely not the case in XP. You can't use the Web-based
service but the normal automatic updates work just fine.

Er, no. That is precisely what _doesn't_ happen when you block WGA.
