CIO / IT Director is certainly a pathway.

Heading up a department in a Government research lab

Heading up a regional high performance computing grid (there are
several like this in the UK - I was rather flattered to be contacted
by recruiters for one recently!)

Pre-sales work - attending meetings with sales teams, gathering
requirements, putting together responses to big tender documents.
And if anyone thinks repsonding to a public or private sector tender
document is easy work, just give it a try.
