Oliver,

To save you the hassle, I've done a quick google for "suse ldap authentication".

http://en.opensuse.org/Howto_LDAP_userAuth is the top hit, and probably a good place to start :-)

It is "bad practice(tm)" to allow users to login as root. It is insecure to allow root login on your servers.
