I had a play with someone's HTC Desire last month, and resolved to
make it my new phone. It was the first non-iPhone phone I'd tried
where they'd actually "got" why the iPhone is so usable (done it a
little bit better IMHO).

It (Android 2.2) is also partly open source. It runs a Linux kernel
with some closed modules, non-standard but open Java userspace (no
glibc), and closed graphics drivers in userspace.

RIch.
