That's the idea of XeTeX and XeLaTeX: that you can just type unicode stuff
into the source file, and you get what you expect provided that the
fonts support it.

Another solution to the "three-eighths" probem might be the xfrac
package for LaTeX which
seems to produce nice looking fractions in text mode.
