Thanks for all the help guys.

It was a cable/jumper problem. As is suggested above the mobo was rather
more pernickety about this sort of thing that the old socket 478 job it
was replacing.

Now I have installed Ubuntu on the box but it freezes when I do more or
less anything in X. I fear I am in for a long evening tomorrow as I
struggle to get the thing working. Oh well
