With regard to cheque clearing, it used to be the case (maybe not so any more
due to weasel banks), that if you presented a cheque over the counter of the
bank branch upon which it was drawn and then got your own bank to phone that
bank branch after 'close of business' that day, they (the bank upon which it was
drawn) were obliged to say the cheque was either paid or not paid with no caveat
