This seems to be a case of "doctor, it hurts when I stamp on my own
foot".  On the other hand you have the flexibility of being able to
easily resize your root partition if you run out of space.

I've not encountered this, unless you mean LVM1 which nobody has used
for years.  In libguestfs we routinely access multiple different LVM2
instances created by multiple operating systems, and I've not seen any
versioning problems.
