6 months but plenty of companies still have 12 month probation periods
even for experienced staff. The job I started this year is 3. I guess it
depends on the job and the company and the market etc etc.

A year is not unreasonable for a junior sysadmin position in my opinion.
They can still have the standard benefits such as sick and holiday pay,
and even a bonus at the end of the year potentially. It just gives the
employer flexibility. The fixed-term contract with a view to permanent
employment is also one way to go.

As for the rate, well, it's nowhere near enough. My first proper
full-time job, in sales, where no skills or experience were required,
was 15k, about 8 years ago. This position will require skills which are
not taught in conventional ways. Despite the lack of experience, surely
this justifies a reward in itself. With the costs of travel and
lunchtime food in today's day and age, they may as well advertise
for a volunteer on expenses.
