Hi,
Thank you to everyone who responded.
I tried out Puppy.
Things I liked:
1) Small
2) union fs.
Things I disliked:
1) saving a state file at shutdown
2) Not up to date with security updates.
So, I have gone with the following solution:
1) pxe netboot and nfs root. (Easy to upgrade and secure enough)
2) On old machines that cannot PXE, use a boot from 4Gig Flash
disk(bigger than 1Gig before) and install a minimal X of ubuntu via
debootstrap.
(Will keep up with updates automatically, but slightly more expensive
than a 1Gig Flash.)
Kind Regards
James
