Yes, I was at that talk. I recall he mentioned the Cinepaint Glasgow 
release was going to be released in a month or so, and poo-pooed GIMP 
for their over ambitious plans for 16-bit, with GEGL. I note there's 
still no sign of Glasgow, and even at the glacial development pace of 
GIMP, they're looking like the safe bet these days....
