I am having a maddening problem with the LXDM display manager on OpenSUSE

I can start it fine, log in and start a session etc.
But when I use lxsession-logout and logout the display manager does not restart.

(Ps. WHY do we need all this dbus, polkitd and system palaver? Give me an X-terminal any day and startx.
Heck, why do we need houses and electric power? I want an open fire and a cave).

I get the following in the system log (hostname changed to protect the innocent)

Apr 16 18:21:43 host23 systemd-logind[751]: Removed session 1000.
Apr 16 18:21:43 host23 polkitd(authority=local): Unregistered Authentication Agent for unix-session:/org/freedesktop/ConsoleKit/Session1 (system bus name :1.3149, object path /org/gnome/PolicyKit1/AuthenticationAgent, locale en_GB.UTF-8) (disconnected from bus)

Apr 16 18:21:43 host23 console-kit-daemon[22221]: rmdir: failed to remove â/var/run/dbus/at_console/hearnsjâ: Directory not empty
Apr 16 18:21:47 host23 killproc: killproc: Usage:
Apr 16 18:21:47 host23 xdm[22532]: ..done
