So I didn't read your email too closely, but it seems as if
the X session has a pty field of ":0", as in:

> rjones   :0           2013-06-19 17:50 (:0)
[...]

Debian has this for a machine which has a desktop but the user is not
logged in:

$ who
(unknown) tty9         2013-03-22 20:59 (:0)
rjones   pts/0        2013-06-25 23:51 (whoo.home.annexia.org)
