Hello John,
Thanks for the reply. For a start I only use Linux now, so would have to 
borrow a Microsoft laptop. No worry, I am happy to try Minicom. I have two 
secondhand HP switches, and the other one (not looked at yet) does have the 
RJ45 console connector, although the configuration instructions appear similar. 
I had assumed that something like XTerm or Konsole would be simple to use with 
the DB9 serial port, but every time I try somthing I find something like the 
baud rate has reset high again, so I am not sure which parts of the link have 
a problem.
