I'm not sure I quite understand, but I have done customized
booting from other devices.
Have you done this from a floppy? I don't see why booting
from a CD would be much different.
There are several HOWTOs on the net for booting a system
(from a floppy) which will run on a diskless machine.

Subject: [Gloucs] Linux bootable CDROMs
Hello,
Does anyone have any experience of making bootable linux CDROMs?
I want a CDROM that will boot a kernel then load a compressed ramdisk
image.
I can boot the kernel OK but then I need to specify the location of the
root image (I'm using LILO).
The root image file is contained within the iso9660 filesystem on the
CDROM, so saying something like 'root=/dev/hdc' at the LILO prompt will
read the first sectors of the CDROM.
I don't know the offset of the root image file on the CD as it's
contained in a filesystem.
Is there a way of telling the kernel to load a ramdisk image from a
filesystem rather than from a device?
