Another vulnerability in a Microsoft product has slowed and in some=20
places effectively brought down the Internet. "Sapphire" exploits a=20
hole in Microsoft's SQL Server.

The worm affected the things we normally think of as the Internet -- the=20
Web, email -- and services such as automatic teller machines and even=20
the servers at American Express.=20

The problems are manifold: Microsoft ships software with holes all over=20
it. It later ships patches. But those patches are said sometimes to=20
break more than they fix, leading system administrators to be extremely=20
circumspect about applying them.

Every notable Internet disruption since Robert Morris's 1988 worm has=20
had Microsoft products at its center.=20
