Hi there

I'm new to this list. I live in Quedgeley and I have a Toshiba Libretto
100CT that I want to use as a network sniffer.

I'm a Linux newbie (I'm a Microsoft network admin, but don't hold that
against me), having only experimented with RedHat 6 a few years back.

Anyway, I'll stop waffling and get to the point. I've installed
Slackware 9.0 (by doing a disk transplant) and got it working. I have a
Realport RBE-100 10/100 Ethernet card.
So far as I can tell, the drivers for the network card are being loaded
(if I type lsmod, it shows two entries for the Xircom):
Module Size Used by Not tainted
xircom_bc 6440 0 (unused)
xircom_tulip_cb 12696 0
When I type "route", I just get the default loopback network and nothing
else. So, it seems like there's a network driver loaded (and I get a
light on the hub), but the rest of the network stack isn't hooking up to
it.
How I go about resolving that is beyond me, though.
I've just taken a look at dmesg, and it does have the line:
eth0: Xircom Cardbus Adapter rev 3 at 0x400, 00:10:A4:EB:57:E9, IRQ0
The fact that it's got the correct ID string and MAC address makes me
feel enthusiastic.
BTW, what's the equivalent of Windows' "ipconfig /release" and "ipconfig
/renew"?
I've just taken a look at ifconfig and tried:
ifconfig eth0 up
I was greeted with:
SIOCSIFLAGS: Resource temporarily unavailable.
I've just found the script /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1, which looks like it tries
to get a DHCP address. If I run it, it returns the message "Attempting
to configure eth0 by contacting a DHCP server...", although no packets
seem to make their way onto the network (light on hub doesn't flash).
Also, if I run ifconfig -a afterwards, it shows that no packets have
gone anywhere. The MAC address on eth0 is the correct one for the card.
Running out of ideas here, but I have a feeling I'm close.
Thanks for any help or ideas you can give me.
Cheers
Oli
