  I doubt if I can help you with your configuration(?) problem as I know
nothing of gd ... but curiosity caused me to click on the links you provided
for mribiti and glug ... and they both produced pretty 'bar' codes ....
which I didn't expect having read 'I've just put it on the glug site... and
it's not running there either'.
 Am I missing the point or could the difference of observations be a helpful
clue to you?

On the subject of printers you said 'you'll see the Smart Label Printer 100
which was what I was going to ask for.'

A look on the Seiko Instruments site said ...

A. Compatibility with Windows 95, 98 and NT require version 4.00 Smart Label
software or later. Windows 2000, ME, and XP users should download version
4.56 or later for full compatibility.

Q. Does the Smart Label Printer work under Macintosh or DOS?
A. No.

Q. Does the Smart Label Printer work under Windows 3.1?
A. Yes. The software can be downloaded here.



This has a comparable aroma to the situation  to Winmodems ... but then I
know nothing ...including what the gd libraries actually do...

Before committing yourself to real cash commitment, I hope you have found a
route to actually talk to this printer - probably not a problem at the
hardware level but if the software interface is not published or solution
available the ride may be a little rocky. I am obviously being naive and
cynical - with any luck someone will have solved it somewhere!
