Subject: [Gloucs] march meeting and some OT stuff

Hi,

Just to say what happened at the meeting.

About 14 people turned up, we were in the board room which was quite
nice, with soft lighting and comfy chairs n desks. We even got a trolly
full of hot coffee, milk, sugar and bottles of water, though I'm not
sure how as they usually charge everyone for that stuff.

We had a really cool talk on udev from Francis and got to ask lots of
questions. We also talked about distros and answered questions for
people before retiring to the bar.

some things people mentioned at the meeting:

some people would like to see a talk on package management for
beginnners,
 - Redhat
 - Debian
 - Mandrake
 - from source
...etc

--------------------------

other non meeting and off topic stuff that might be of interest to
people:

I've been at a careers festival helping out most of this week and had an
interesting chat with the GCHQ guys who were there too. They're
apparently recruiting at the moment, with Linux related positions at 13k
(4 gcse's) and 18k a year (higher quals needed or 5 years in industry
and called a cl10 position?) if anyone's interested. Someone from there
shout if I've not got the above right.

I asked lots of questions and tried to stop short of the ones that might
make a white van follow me around for the rest of the week. The guy I
spoke to said he used linux and spoke a little about nessus and snort as
well as the security qualification that you could pay+take through
http://www.cesg.gov.uk/ I can't remember what it's called but you have
to be able to remotely root both a Linux and windows box from what I
gathered which I figured might interest the odd quiet character or two I
can think of who might still be on the list.

Also there's the "Infosecurity Europe" event coming up which is free if
you book in advance:

Grand Hall, Olympia, London.
Tuesday 27th April 2004 10:00-17:00
Wednesday 28th April 2004 10:00-17:00
Thursday 29th April 2004 10:00-16:00

Guy
