I finally got around to this job over the Christmas break.
Following the advice of Glyn and others I installed ipcop and looked for an 
addon to do url filtering.
I had no luck with SquidGuard or DansGuardian, but I found an addon called 
urlfilter which did the trick.
I can provide a more detailed howto if anyone wants to do the same thing.
